Don’t Let Anyone Dull Your Sparkle

Don't Let Anyone Dull Your Sparkle, Happy Girl Life, Happiness

A few years ago there was a contestant named Tierra on the American reality television show The Bachelor.  She was an entertaining character who was passionate and quite problematic. Whenever she would get into a conflict with another member of the show she would often repeat her popular mantra, “don’t let anyone dull your sparkle” to herself. It was always so funny when she would say it, almost hysterical. She was so serious and dramatic in proclaiming this mantra. So much so that it became one of those moments that makes you roll your eyes, laugh, and say, “seriously, girl?! Get it together!”

It became a joke between my mom and me. She would always tell me this same phrase randomly and out of context to be humorous. I could be on the phone with her venting about my day or about someone nearly side swiping my car on the highway and she would say, “hey, don’t let anyone dull your sparkle,” and we would both chuckle. We would mock this phrase a lot, as it was quite funny. However, through a particularly challenging time in my life, when my mom would say it, those words took on a powerful, positive meaning.

“Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle”

Just like diamonds, each one of us is a unique creation. We have certain characteristics that make us different from others. We come in different shapes and sizes and colors. Just like diamonds, we each have a sparkle that people can notice from across a crowded room. And just like diamonds, without proper care, we can become dull and lose our sparkle.

There will always be times in life that can cause your sparkle to fade. When you’re having problems in your relationships with others, or your boss doesn’t acknowledge your hard work. When your physical health isn’t quite where you want it to be, or you can’t seem to accomplish the goal that you so desperately want to accomplish; your ability to sparkle can be negatively impacted.

“Shine bright like a diamond”

It’s important to stay focused on how you are capable, strong, and able to overcome any obstacles that come your way. Care for yourself physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually by treating yourself right and never doubting your greatness. Don’t allow people’s words and opinions or life’s setbacks or failure to cause you to shrink back and stop shining. Pick yourself up, dust off the haters, put on your invisible superhero cape, and keep going.

Never lose sight of who you actually are, and never give someone else the power to make you feel like less than you are. Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle. As Aibileen, one of the characters in Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel The Help says to the main character of the story, “you is kind, you is smart, and you is important”. Shine on, my friend! You never know whose life you’re positively impacting with your sparkle.

This is so inspiring! (And now that you mention it, that character from that show now intrigues me). Haha anyhow, I agree with all points you’ve made here! Life will always have problems but it should never break us down. 🙂

There are some mofos and bastards in life, it’s like an arcade videogame where you just need to ignore/ kick them out out of your way and carry on to the next “phase or screen”. Seriously, we have to consider those people like the bad guys from a movie or videogame. We need them though, because everytime you “beat” them, you get more superpowers or bonuses lives or just to achieve more knowledge. So my friends, It’s all about enjoying the ride. Outsmart the present, Heaven is waiting!

Oh, aren’t there. So many people that want to steal the joy of others. I like your video game analogy. It really connects the dots in a new way.

This is a good motto to say to yourself when having a bad day or in conflicts with others. I always tell me kids that our home is a “safe space” where we are all kind to each other. There are so many people out there who do not care if they dull someone’s sparkle that family should always build one another up!

That is great that you create a safe environment for your children. If you can’t shine at home, then where can you shine.

Sometimes it’s so easy to compare yourself to others. I’m making a concerted effort not to do that and to just try and do what makes me happy. I think that’s key to shining on!

Good for you! Comparison is the thief of joy, that’s for sure.

This, my dear, is the sweetest thing I’ve read today. Thank-you for putting a smile on my face and a little spring in my step! It’s been a few years since I’ve watched The Bachelor and had completely forgotten about Tierra. Isn’t it cool to think about how many ripples have come about because of that one line (the pebble)? x

That is a good motto to have, even if it did come from a reality show character. It’s funny how something that starts off as a joke can become so meaningful at a time in life when you need it most. It’s definitely easy to lose your “sparkle” in the face of so much adversity.

I could not agree with you more. Shine was one of my focus words for 2017. It’s been a tough year to keep shining to be sure. I’m thinking of keeping it around for 2018.
